About us

Our History

Our story begins in the mid-1980’s when three brothers, Piet, Izak and Fred Earle, purchased the farm Naboomspruit and decided to start farming chickens. The South African Limpopo Province town of Naboomspruit (now Mookgophong) which was proclaimed in 1907, borders the farm’s one boundary.

In the Afrikaans language the word “Saam” means “Together” and being together in the business the brothers agreed to call their new Company “SPIF”, an acronym for Saam Piet Izak Fred.

SPIF BELEGGINGS (PTY) LTD was registered and SPIF CHICKEN was hatched!

In 1991 a small poultry abattoir was built on the farm but by 1997 the Earle brothers, who were builders by trade, were ready to exit the chicken industry and they sold their fledgling chicken business to the current owners, the Traviss family.

After more than three decades SPIF CHICKEN has grown organically into a multi-faceted agribusiness and a South African success story.
